Physical Description Canaan stands at the height of 190.5 centimeters and sports a lean build, weighing in at 67.6 kilograms. He was born with a rare form of albinism; as such, he has stark-white hair, pale skin with a smattering of freckles over the bridge of his nose, and eyes a beautiful aquamarine. Canaan adorns civilian attire of a practical nature, preferring high-quality clothing of a durable build that offers comfort as well as functionality. He favors fabrics with muted colors, usually earth tones, and few embellishments. Although stylistically pure, Canaan pairs his clothing with accessories that are, as well, simple in nature, yet complementary to the attire. His nose is pierced with a tasteful gold hoop, aligning the curve of his left nostril, and coupled surface piercings angle the defined iliac furrow of his pelvis, near either hip bone. Aside from these adornments, Canaan has no body art or distinguishing marks.

Personality & Traits

General Overview Canaan is pleasant, articulate, and compassionate while being detail and task oriented. Occasionally prone to sarcasm and cynicism, he is an idealist with strong moral convictions about right and wrong, good and evil, and remains courageous about these ideals; among which are the sanctity of life, galactic peace, universal education, elimination of poverty, and the unifying principles of the Federation. His behavior and mannerisms are affable and socially relevant. Canaan places a high premium on good manners and does his best to avoid confrontation. Surprising to many, he has an inherent need to be liked by others and seeks recognition of his efforts and accomplishments.
Strengths & Weaknesses Idealistic and free-spirited, Canaan is uninhibited, outgoing, and personable. He has a disarming sense of humor, which helps to make fast friends. Patient and empathetic, Canaan strives to remain categorically diplomatic and courteous, both in speech and action, preferring first and foremost to listen. He isn't easily frustrated, choosing to focus those energies on assessing the situation to offer the best solution.

Loyal to a fault, sometimes at the cost of his well being, Canaan will invest himself in the care of those he loves. It's easy for others to take advantage of this kindness, leaving him vulnerable to others' ill-intentions. Canaan is quick to shut others out when he perceives a line has been crossed and will hold a grudge for some time. He doesn't always think before speaking, his playful sarcasm often misinterpreted for condescension. He can be quick to apologize, even when there's nothing to apologize for.
Passions Canaan has a keen appreciation for the arts, yet prefers photography and watercolor above all other media and is honing a developing appreciation for music. He enjoys several literary interests and journals regularly. An avid outdoorsman, Canaan likes swimming, four wheeling, snowmobiling, skiing (downhill and cross country), snowshoeing, camping (all seasons), backpacking, fly-fishing, canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, hiking, and mountain biking. Canaan generally prefers games of chance and forms of recreation requiring an above-average amount of physical exertion (e.g., water polo, field hockey, and soccer); he's been known to engage in these activities on a purely social level yet enjoys those of solitude, as well. He enjoys a quiet game of cribbage or solitaire and participates in a daily exercise program to stay in shape. Canaan enjoys the company of friends and family and has been known to sneak a drink during social or special occasions.

Personal History The only child to parents Matilda Benoit (née) and Gregory Serene, Canaan Serene was born on Earth in 2371. Canaan was raised in the north woods of Maine, near the Moosehead Lake region, where his mother and father were employed with the department of inland fisheries and wildlife as a veterinary pathologist and ecologist, respectively.

From an early age, Canaan accompanied Matilda and Gregory on their expeditions, learning about nature in a practical, hands-on methodology. It was during these extended stays away from the creature comforts of their lakeside cabin, that Canaan derived a genuine love for exploration and discovery while learning to appreciate the natural order of things.

Although proficient in many other subjects, Canaan excelled in the languages, especially xenolinguistics, as well as phonetics, syntax, and grammar. His grades were of such a caliber that he was invited to attend several college-level courses through the University of New England. It was during this time that Canaan applied and qualified to attend the Starfleet Academy Preparatory School in Paris France. While attending school, Canaan endured a grueling schedule of academic coursework, drilling, practical education, and physical training—all of which was intended to prepare him for life at the academy. Canaan thrived in the schools’ relentlessly demanding environment and exceedingly high expectations while coming to respect the strict regiment imposed.

Upon graduating from prep-school, Canaan was granted rapid admission to Starfleet Academy. To the surprise of many, he declined the offer, deciding on a gap-year of sorts. Although Matilda and George attempted to dissuade their son from making a hasty decision, Canaan placed his academic goals on hold and decided on a less-than-orthodox path to exploring the stars. With the help of a close friend from primary school, Canaan was referred to an old Cardassian freighter looking to take on a few new deckhands. Although the role wasn't exactly what he was seeking, Canaan knew the opportunity would grant him the chance to visit strange new planets and locations in a more relaxed, low-key environment.

Without question, Canaan was a greenhorn; unlike several on board, however, he didn't seek out the opportunity due to negative experiences of any kind. He wasn't leaving due to strained family relations or heartbreak; he wasn't avoiding the rigors of academy life or attempting to prove something of himself to others. Instead, Canaan needed a break from academia, and yet he didn't want to miss out on the chance to explore. The freighter would offer honest work, a steady income, room and board, and the opportunity to travel the galaxy. Although his parents weren't happy with his decision to sign-on with a cargo hauler, their protests were softened by Canaan's assurances that he'd return to Earth after his first contract to re-enroll at the academy.
