Guy Fawkes his claim to fame is the involvement in the 1605 Gunpowder plot to blow up British Parliament in attempt to kill King James I of England. They were stopped on the Fifth of November, when Fawkes planned to set fire to the powder kegs underneath parliament.
When caught a Scottish lord asked him what he was going to do with so much gunpowder. He answered him, "To blow you Scotch beggars back to your own native mountains!". When asked for his name he gave them the false identity of ‘John Johnson’. The following days he was tortured. He didn’t give up his co-conspirator’s names until after he had heard of them appearing in arms, even then he only gave the names of those who died or the names of the people who were already known to the authorities.
On the 31st of January 1606 Guy Fawkes and a number of others that were implicated with the conspiracy were tried in Westminster Hall. They were found guilty and were taken to Old Palace Yard in Westminster, to be hanged, drawn and quartered. Fawkes escaped this gruesome fate by jumping up right before being hanged. This broke his neck, killing him instantly. His body was still gutted and quartered, but he was already dead.
