Background

Personal History Carl Maximus Clark IX was born on the bridge of the SS Pacific Reef, a cargo vessel whose only job was to transport the absolute worst cargo available. Scrap metal, large containers of cryogenic pods, "fresh" ingredients from outlying colonies, and other shipments that require a phaser and a grenade to fight one's way out. His father, Carl Clark VIII, was the Helmsman while his mother, Kimberly Clark, was the Security Officer. His older brother, James, was four years older than Onyx, who enjoyed taking care of the baby while the parents did their jobs. Onyx got his nickname from the CO of the Pacific Reef, his grandfather Talbert Clark, because he was sick and tired of trying to remember both Carl's name, so he named young Carl after his cat, Onyx. The nickname stuck. Of course, Onyx's curiosity got him hurt many times in his youth. Turns out playing with a substance that can catch fire when one is three is a terrible idea.

As Onyx grew up, his parents gradually started to include Onyx in the family business. He got to learn the bare basics of shipboard life, but it was only to assist others and take orders. As much as Onyx could, he would watch his father fly the Pacific Reef, take marksmanship lessons from his mother, and tinker with the engineer aboard the ship. Every once in a while, he would also go to the ship's doctor to learn how to do basic first aid. James, although he took part in the family business, was not overly fond of being part of the company, and he wanted to go into Star Fleet. Against everyone's blessing, James went to Star Fleet at the age of 18 while Carl was 14. Onyx missed his brother, but his family kept Onyx busy with book learning and primary childhood education. Everything went south when the news came nobody expected. James, through no fault of his own, died in a training accident. His family was devastated. Everything just stopped, and Onyx tried his best to keep going.

When Onyx came of age, he made a difficult decision. He wanted to explore life before he tied himself down to the ship, take some time off to do odd jobs. Talbert, though hesitant, understood Onyx's decision. The Pacific Reef would not survive much longer, and he wanted Onyx to go out on his own and experience life for what it is. Onyx had the blessing, so long as Onyx NEVER joined Star Fleet or go to the Academy. The following four years were Onyx doing odd jobs and saving up the money he never did aboard the Pacific Rim. Realizing he wanted to go back to the stars, Onyx tried to look for a crew. When he put his name into the list of possible crewmembers, he realized that he did not have the "training" to be an able crewmember and would have to start at the bottom of the ladder. It was either he accepts that fate, or he would not be able to go at all. He chose wisely, and he gladly signed his name to be an ordinary crewman.
