"Trust me, I know what I'm doing." She didn't have a clue. All Mayterial knew was that she had to get back in there and snap Ares out of it. She reached forward with both hands this time and focused on the thoughts that came from Ares into her own so easily. It didn't feel right that she was able to do this, she was never a great telepath, she managed but she was never this good. It didn't matter right now, all that mattered was that Ares woke up and realised the truth.

Part 2

The night was incredible. It was everything Ares had dreamed of. They had about 365 nights to make up for, and Adam sure as hell did that. His soft warm hands ran easily up and down her body as he kissed the goofy smile on her face. Her parents had made sure the guest house was well prepared for them, leaving a bottle of ouzo out for them along with freshly picked roses. However, the bottle remained untouched as the pair had already been drunk on each other and couldn’t keep their hands off of each other as Adam carried the ecstatic Ares into the white and blue bedroom and tossing her onto the once pristine bedsheets of the queen sized bed.

The sun had woken Ares up as she laid on her stomach with the white bedsheet barely covering her naked body. She could feel Adam’s warmth and hear his gentle endearing snores next to her. She couldn’t help but smirk at the thought that she had worn him out. He stirred slightly when she gave him a soft kiss on his upper back but remained dead asleep. She had no idea what time it was but it obviously didn’t matter. Here, time did not exist. It was irrelevant.

What was still relevant was her thirst. Ares felt like she was chewing on cotton balls and needed to fix that fast before Adam felt too repulsed to kiss her good morning. Slipping out of the bed as quietly as she could, the woman grabbed Adam’s black patrol jacket that had been casually discarded in the heat of passion. She couldn’t help but take in a strong whiff of the material that smelled of his strong musky scent that made her heart melt. She never realized she would ever miss that smell as much as she did. Ares pulled the jacket on to cover herself (it barely did) as she headed out to the kitchen.

Ares nearly jumped out of her skin at the sight of May sitting at the kitchen table. She quickly wrapped the jacket tightly around her body to cover up. She thought she had told May to leave her alone and the sight of the woman just made her feel even more disdain for her. “Jesus, Droz, were you following us?! I could get you for burglary, you know?”

"There won't be any signs of breaking and entering." Mayterial casually remarked, "because this is all happening in your head. I'm not really here. I'm standing next to you in the medical bay." She shook her head, "I really don't like doing this. This is what killed my father. I don't want to be here any more than you want me here." She focused herself on Ares' attire and the things she was wearing yesterday when they had the conversation in her quarters, forcing that image on Ares. Perhaps if she could make the situation unstable, if she could make her see that this wasn't real perhaps she'd part ways amicably. "See, much better." She smirked a bit as she looked at Ares now in her regular work outfit.

Ares looked down at her black tank top, black short shorts, black boots, and the leg holster that instantaneously replaced the comforting jacket. She felt the material with panicking hands. Her heart began pumping a million miles a minute. This can’t be happening… this can’t be true… Burning with rage, Ares shot her eyes up to May who was still sitting at the table as if she just hadn’t knocked Ares’s world on its back. “I swear, Droz, if you don’t get the fuck out of here…”

“Hey hey, sweetheart,” Adam’s groggy and half-asleep voice came waltzing in from the hallway and his hands that wrapped around Ares’s waist instantly eased the fiery spirit back, “what’s with the ruckus?” He kissed her on her neck and looked up at May, his lip twitching up in familiarity. “You come here to take my girl home?”

Ares’s eyes widened as she turned her head to look at Adam to make sure he hadn’t snuck in some ouzo before coming into the kitchen. But he was serious. His blue eyes were relaxed and almost pleased to see her. And just last night he asked who the woman had been… When she looked back at May she focused all of her efforts to not kill the woman in front of Adam. “May, stop with your goddamn mind games! You stay away from Adam!”

“Sweetheart, relax,” Adam chuckled at Ares’s rather passionate interaction with May. He turned Ares around and wrapped his arms around her waist to bring her near. “This isn’t May.” He leaned down to give her a reassuring kiss.

Ares pulled herself back from him, her mouth gaped open at what her fiancé just told her. How did he know who she was? She never told him who she was. “Adam, what are…?”

"You are in a bio bed, back on the Fawkes." May felt the emotions inside of Ares' head. The sadness, the anger, the denial. All of them in one fierce torrent. "This isn't real, Ares. You know that. Deep down. You know it." She looked over at the manifestation of Adam, "be the strong woman I know you to be. Resist whatever it is that is causing this."

Adam gently cupped her jaw with his hands. “She’s right. You have been fighting for me for so long. But I’m holding you back. I’m keeping you from living the life I know you’re capable of.” Ares’s tears dripped onto his thumbs, causing him to smirk. This was the first time she had ever cried in front of him. “The Captain… hell, this whole universe… needs you.”

Ares’s cheeks were hot with the pain, the torturous words spoken by the man who had given her everything. He wasn’t real, though. But what he was giving her at this moment was. Adam right now was a part of her memories and her subconscious that she had buried six feet under the night he died in her arms. She had been holding onto his ghost for too long. And that’s all he was. “But I don’t want to leave you,” she whispered meekly through her sorrow.

Adam shook his head quickly and gave her another kiss, this time it nearly knocked the wind out of her. “You’re not leaving me. I’m always going to be with you, alright? Just trust me on that. And when you’re ready, and I mean, really ready, when you’ve done what you’re here to do, I’ll be waiting right here with your parents with open arms.” He looked over her shoulder at May. “Make sure that Colt guy treats her right.” He looked back at Ares. “He really likes you. And I know you like him. I know he’ll never be me, of course,” his face brightened when he saw the small smile form on Ares’s face from the joke, “but he’ll make you happy. He sees your independence, that spirit that burns in you, like I did. It’s okay for you to see where it goes with him. I know you’ll always love me. That will never change.”

Mayterial had stood up now and with her arms folded she was barely able to withstand the tsunami of emotions coming from Ares. She swallowed the biggest lump in her throat and bit back the tears, "Open your eyes, Miss Onasis."
